India Becomes Second-Largest Source of New US Citizens: 65,960 Indians Naturalized in 2022

India was the second-largest source country for new US citizens, with 65,960 Indians officially becoming citizens.
In the fiscal year 2022, approximately 53% of the 24.5 million immigrants in the US were naturalized citizens.
The Congressional Research Service reported that 969,380 individuals became naturalized US citizens in 2022.
The largest numbers of naturalizations came from Mexico (128,878), India (65,960), the Philippines (53,413), Cuba (46,913), and the Dominican Republic (34,525).
Additionally, there were significant numbers of naturalizations from Vietnam (33,246) and China (27,038).
According to the Congressional Research Service (CRS), as of 2023, there were 2,831,330 foreign-born American nationals from India, making it the second largest group after Mexico's 10,638,429.
China followed with 2,225,447 foreign-born American nationals.
However, approximately 42% of India-born foreign nationals in the US are ineligible to become US citizens, while around 290,000 may be eligible based on their Green Card or Legal Permanent Residency status.
